  • Description

Letter regarding donation towards headstone for Jack Martin (Elizabeth Martin Carvill's brother) Willie (William Hamilton Lawlor, husband of Mary Ellen Martin, sister of Elizabeth Martin Carvill.) Mary (Mary Ellen Martin Lawlor, sister of Elizabeth) John (John Carvill, husband of ELizabeth) Jack (John or Jack Martin, brother of Elizabeth, 1857-1901) Note:   JOHN MARTIN, b. Kilbroney, 1857, was a medical student at Trinity College, declared a lunatic 1887, and d. unmarried 16 days after being transferred by court-order to Downpatrick Lunatic Asylum, Co Down, on 31 Mar 1901.   The prior lunatic asylum was House of St. John of God, Stillorgan. His lunacy papers were sealed for 100 years from 1897.   When opened in 1997, it was discovered that by 1890 the family property at Kilbroney and various other Co. Down properties were up for sale to support the 2 brothers who were declared lunatics, the lawyers, and to split up the Martin lands. The 5 sisters never received the inheritances that they were willed by their father. Why would two brothers be declared lunatics in such a short time, but none of the sisters?   William Hamilton Lawlor spent until his death in 1935 trying to get the inheritances for the 5 sisters away from the lawyers & judges.
