17 Downshire Rd, Newry. Dundalk London Phyllis Ruth (Ruth Martin Carvill Crossle) E. Carvill (Elizabeth Martin Carvill, mother of Ruth Martin Carvill Crossle) Her father (John Carvill) Letter to Phyllis from Elizabeth Carvill about the behavior of her daughter, Ruth.   Ruth (who is married at this point to Philip Crossle) has been seen with a "gentleman, married, middle aged, reputed wealthy, and of considerable position in his county'.   He "resides several miles from Dundalk'.   His "lines of life are not by any means parallel with Ruth-s.'   Her Father saw her last summer "driving with a gentleman quite a stranger to him in a motor car through Newry in the evening coming from a direction that suggested to him that they had probably been much further from Dundalk than Newry was.'   Some of her friends "have expressed their great distress at her behaviour'.   "I am sure the first question that will arise in your mind is does the husband know all this - I cannot give this a direct reply, but from the talk that has undoubtedly been going on I cannot but think that he has at least a partial knowledge of the matter.   The attention of one of his brothers I believe has been called to it lately but whether he spoke to him about it or not I have not been able to ascertain.   It would seem nearly impossible that some of the talk would not have reached the husband but then you know the sort of man he is.'   She then mentions that Ruth-s husband "has little control over Ruth'.   She is asking Phyllis to "more favourably influence her.'   She suggests her husband go to London to discuss the "unfortunate position of affairs' with her, and her parents and how she could influence Ruth for the better.   Elizabeth feels that "Ruth would resent any interference or suggestion coming from us.'   She concludes by saying "I heard she was over in London about November - did you see her and where did she stay?'
