Description
Letter from John Carvill to Lucy (who is in Moynalty). He helps her with a timber sale and advocates planting Ireland with more trees. He enjoys golf & makes comments about various people mentioned below, including one paragraph about his displeasure at his daughter-s marriage. People and places mentioned: Christina Carvill or the boys, Greenore, "the man Cavanagh", Elizabeth (Martin Carvill, wife of John Carvill) is in Co. Carlow visiting friends. This paragraph is about his daughter, Ruth Martin Carvill, and her recent marriage: "Ruth's marriage has not been a satisfaction to us, very much the reverse - her husband in our estimation having neither health nor means. And it took place without our knowledge or consent so that we don't regard the connection with pleasant sentiments." NOTE: Ruth Martin Carvill married at age 20 in July 1908 to Philip Crossle who was 13 years older than her. He was the son of Dr. Francis Clements Crossle of Newry and was an engineer and professional genealogist. They divorce in January 1920, having had no children. Moynalty is the family home of Fanny Carvill, wife of Patrick George Carvill, brother of John Carvill. Lucy, therefore, would be Fanny-s sister, Lucy Gartlan, (1847-1909). Christina Carvill (and the boys) would be the 4 children of Patrick George Carvill & Fanny Gartlan Carvill - Christina Carvill (1878-1912), Francis Ignatius Carvill (1872-1927), Patrick George Carvill (Jr, b 1872), and Thomas Gartlan Carvill (b 1874). Greenore is across Carlingford Lough from Greencastle in Co. Lough.
