Description
Dear Sergeant Returning to our communication with one of your men a few days ago, I find on enquiry from my care taker (Patrick Hamill) at north commons that there were 4 pieces of round timber, about [?] weight of wood] partly cut up for fine wood, and a wooden box (about 36" x 18' x 12' I believe) taken from my place. ---------- Of the round timber one piece was each about 6 foot long x about 5' or 6' diameter - the other 3 pieces were about 9 to 12 [foot?] long & probably a bit thicker. One of them ( an Austrian or Corsican pine) being so [heary?] that [my?] man might think it would have needed 2 men to remove it - the remaining 2 pieces were both black alder [?] a timber with a pattern dark shiny smooth bark & which on being [?] cut soon turns a saffron colour on the fresh cut end. There is no Austrian or Corsican pine except our own, or any black alder except my own & Mrs [Jorderon-s?] in the neighbourhood that I know of. The box was used for holding slack coal but there was only a remnant of this in it. [?] on examining the premises our man found some coal slack near a small iron gate heading to our upper field, leading him to suppose that the box was taken that way (in the direction from my cottage towards the upper or old road) and was upset on the way near the small gate mentioned. I was extremely glad to hear that you were well & able to be back at work again. Yours truely J Carvill P.S Though the value of the [?] altogether is small probably [?] I don-t like to think or feel that we should be liable to such treatment as soon as one leaves the place. -
