  • Description

In Ruth Martin Carvill's journal entry dated 26 Aug 1902., she describes her day of preparation for a party of 45 people at her home, including the games they played. After the party was over she rode down to Ballyoonan with her cousin Millicent, who stayed the night with them.   In one place she says cousin Millicent and in another Aunt Millie.   It ends with "continued.' NOTE:   Aunt Millie would be Millicent Jane Martin (1848-1929), sister of Ruth-s Mother, Elizabeth Martin Carvill. She married Dr. John Nashville Villers Ryan in 1872.   Cousin   Millicent would be her eldest daughter, Millicent Charlotte Villers Ryan (1883-1955) who never married.   In 1901 the Census lists them as living at Rosstrevor, Kilbroney, Co. Down.       Of interest might be that the Medical Doctor father of Millicent Charlotte died in 1892 and she became eligible at that time to be educated at the Masonic Female Orphan School because her income consisted of an annuity of 30 pounds and interest on 700 pounds.   There is not a record that she was accepted into the school but that she was the one of 7 pupils competing for that position.   Aunt Millie in 1903 is listed as a widow in a petition to the court for support money from the estate of her brother, Robert, that is tied up with his lunacy court hearings.   Both Millicents eventually donated much of the "Honest' John Martin papers to PRONI and the National Library.   John Martin was the Uncle of Aunt Millie and Elizabeth M Carvill who served in Parliament from 1870-1875.   He and brother David Martin cared for the 7 orphaned children at Kilbroney House when their parents both died in 1858 right after Elizabeth Martin Carvill was born.   That responsibility then rested on the eldest brother, Robert (later a lunatic), after he was of age (about 1870).
