Description
Ruth Martin Carvill's essay entitled "Marco Polo". A story of "Little Marco Polo" dreaming of joining his Venetian father and 2 older brothers on their adventures in Bakhara, after hearing the stories of Cathay from the ambassador of the court of Kublai Khan. The brothers returned to Rome with a letter for the Pope asking for Europeans to be sent - instead they took back now grown Marco. Marco became ambassador for the Khan to Bengal and reported back of his many discoveries including the country of Japan. He was given the title "Yang Tchow", lived there for 17 years, and returned home to Venice by ship with merchandise from Persia. Later he was taken prisoner by the Genoese in their war against Venice and he related his stories to his fellow prisoners. The book of his life brought him fame, he became a member of the Grand Council of Venice, and the Portuguese used the book to find the Hindustanis (via the Cape of Hood Hope) & inspired Columbus.
