  • Description

Ruth Martin Carvill's essay entitled "An Account of the Debate" where she describes the nervousness of the debaters before the debate at school.   The debate motion was "that little boys should not be encouraged to play with dolls.'   Ruth used very descriptive language in describing the atmosphere in the classroom among the debaters, as well as her feelings when she stood to speak. One student mentioned that she looked forward to the time when men should stay at home and mind the babies while the women went and sat in Parliament. (Ruth-s thought to that speech was that she sincerely hoped she would not live to see that day!)   The vote after the debate was against the motion - little boys "of a certain age' should be allowed to play with dolls.   Names mentioned:   Winnie Johnson, Miss Clark, Phyllis, Miss Ellis.   The last page includes more spelling words. Pen illustrations by Ruth Martin Carvill: 1st page - illustration of a girl gazing away from a table and watch bob? [spelling words written above] 3rd   page - illustration of a doll and dutch doll. 5th page - illustration of a young boy "The little boy of the certain age of thre or four' 7th & 9th & 11th & 13th pages - blank Teacher grade for illustrations: 3 Teacher grade:   4 (or A?) Teacher comment:   But a good deal of repetition!   A good end.   26/ii/03
